Podcast: Tattoo taboo? The role of religion in getting inked

Tattoos continue to be popular in the UK, especially among the young. How much does religion play a part in the decision to get ‘inked’?

Tattoos seem to be increasingly popular although, as this BBC feature points out, the notion that tattooing has now entered the mainstream is nothing new. Similar reports appeared in the media over 100 years ago, with the same questions asked.

According to survey findings reported on Bournemouth University’s BUzz website, 21% of 18-29 year olds in the UK are now tattooed. In the 30-39 age category the number is even higher, with 35% of  participants claiming to wear ink on their bodies.

Sodaba Haidare wanted to know how much religion plays a part in the decision of getting ‘inked’ and what religions say about tattoos.
