What to do on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, so it’s time to decide what to do with your loved one on that special day. Islington, Clerkenwell and Shoreditch all offer different events for two and even Anti-Valentine’s specials for singles or those sick of all the hearts and kisses

Cinema

If you’re thinking of taking your Valentine to a dark and cosy movie theatre for a date, The Screen on the Green on Upper Street offers a sexy option. On Saturday, they are showing Fifty Shades of Grey at 3:20, 6:15 and 9:10pm.

Based on the best-selling book by E. L. James, the movie’s story should be familiar to anyone by now. When college graduate Anastasia Steele is invited to an interview with the intimidating billionaire Christian Grey they feel a strong attraction towards each other. As Anastasia will find out later though, Grey has rather special tastes when it comes to love. This erotic movie might give you some ideas to take home.

Flowers

Of course, the right gift is a very important part of Valentine’s Day and flowers are a trusted classic. Boxpark on Bethnal Green Road in Shoreditch offers special flowery presents for Valentine’s Day. Columbia Creative hosts a pop-up store from February 11-15, selling a variety of bouquets and romantic gifts. They also have a vase design workshop on Sunday. For £45 you learn how to create flower arrangements and floral designs. A vase, the flowers and all other materials needed are included in the price.

Restaurants

The classic Valentine’s date is of course a romantic dinner. At Hoxley & Porter on Upper Street, this can be combined with a bit of time travel. Their Aphrodisiac 1920s Valentine’s Day event takes you to the past with live music, drinks and food. The three course dinner costs £40 per person and includes ‘oysters & bubbles’ at arrival. It starts at 7pm (doors 6:30pm) and you have to be over 18 to attend.

In case you are willing to splash out a bit on your Valentine, take him or her to 155 Bar & Kitchen on Clerkenwell Road. At this restaurant, you can enjoy a fancy dinner for two for £140. Two different menus are offered, both accompanied by French wine, true to the spirit of Valentine’s Day. The offer runs from February 9-14 and tables can be reserved by phone or online.

Anti-Valentine’s Day

Why not escape all the Valentine’s cuteness and celebrate an Anti-Valentine’s Day instead? On February 14, the club Concrete on Shoreditch High Street and WeLovePopClub host the “We are never getting back together” Anti-Valentine’s Day Special party night. Music will include all your favourite love songs and heartbreak anthems. The club opens at 9pm and tickets cost £5 in advance and £7 at the door. Entrance only for 18+.
